Botox Q&A
How does BOTOX® work?
BOTOX® is an injectable neuromuscular agent that works by blocking the signals between the brain and specific muscles. Normally, these signals “tell” the muscles to contract during facial movements and expressions like smiling or frowning. When the muscles contract, they tug on the overlying skin, forming lines and creases. Over time, repeated facial expressions and movements cause these lines to become deeper. By blocking nerve signals that cause muscle contractions, the lines and wrinkles don’t form.
Can BOTOX® be used to treat any kind of wrinkles?
No, BOTOX® is only used to treat lines and wrinkles that form as a result of muscle contractions – so-called dynamic wrinkles. These include the crow’s feet, forehead lines and the lines that form between the brows. Sometimes BOTOX® can be used to treat tiny lines around the lips. Wrinkles that form as a result of sun and environmental exposures, illness, stress, age and gravity (called static wrinkles) are treated with chemical peels, dermabrasion or injectable cosmetic fillers that “plump up” the skin and reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
Can BOTOX® be used in combination with cosmetic fillers?
Yes, many patients have injections of both BOTOX® and cosmetic fillers to treat both dynamic and static wrinkles to treat wrinkles anywhere in the face.
Do BOTOX® injections hurt?
BOTOX® is injected with a very fine needle and most patients report little to no discomfort during treatment. Afterward, cool compresses can be lightly applied to the area to reduce swelling, but it’s important not to rub the area to avoid moving the BOTOX® solution outside of the treatment area, which can decrease the effects.
How many injections will I need during each treatment session?
That depends on the area that’s being treated. A careful evaluation prior to injections will determine the number and location of the injections to achieve optimal effects based on your personal treatment objectives.
How long do the results last?
The effects of BOTOX® treatments last about four months. Many patients find repeated treatments help soften lines and wrinkles so they can wait longer between “touch-up” treatments.
